Reticent but complex nose opens slowly to reveal dried fruits, fresh almond, hazelnut, clove and minerals. Suave on entry, then ripe but vibrant in the middle palate, combining brisk lemony citricity, more showy pineapple and a powerful element of pure liquid stone. Finishes wonderfully aromatic, subtle and long, with superb energy to the mineral and hazelnut flavors. Classic soil-inflected Chevalier, among the stars of the vintage and built for long life.

"The 2004 Merlot (which includes 3% Cabernet Franc) is a dense, rich, concentrated effort boasting a dark ruby/purple color along with plenty of black cherry and currant fruit intermixed with espresso roast and earth notes. Its moderate tannin is sweet and well-integrated. Drink it over the next decade. A lovely Merlot, rich and fine, with lots of blackberry and cherry fruit, but also with more complex, earthier notes of olive tapenade, balsamic vinegar and sautéed wild mushrooms. The wine should hold for some years, but is really at its best now."

The 2005 Alder Springs Vineyard Chardonnay from the slopes of Laytonville in Mendocino County exemplifies of the high quality of wines produced from this cool-climate site. Classic chardonnay fruit, lemon zest, and cut grass build to almost Viognier-like aromatics of apricot and floral notes on the nose, along with vanilla and toasted oak. The nose is reflected in the palate with a creamy, almost vis¬cous mouthfeel enlivened by balanced acidity. The oak and fruit work well together, and the citrus and stone fruit notes are joined by crisp pear and minerality through the finish. |
